The Celtics made several costly mistakes and missed a number of costly shots en route to a 112-105 loss to Cade Cunningham and the Pistons.

In the final five minutes, Brown hit a 3-pointer and blocked two shots to help Boston cut a nine-point deficit to two. But he also had a turnover, a shooting foul and, most consequentially, two missed free throws during that closing stretch.

Thanks to Brown's big half, the Celtics took a 57-53 lead into halftime, but they fell behind late and couldn't catch the Pistons.

Payton Pritchard was listed as questionable prior to tip-off with neck spasms, but he started alongside Jaylen Brown, Neemias Queta, Derrick White, and Jordan Walsh. The Eastern Conference-leading Pistons started Ausar Thompson, Tobias Harris, Jalen Duren, Duncan Robinson, and Cade Cunningham.

Cade Cunningham scored 32 points and hit a season-high six 3-pointers to lead the Pistons, who improved to 21-5. The Celtics, who handed Detroit one of its five losses on Nov. 26, dropped their second straight game to fall to 15-11.

The Detroit Pistons (20-5) travel to TD Garden for a matchup on Peacock with the Boston Celtics (15-10). This is third meeting of the season between the teams as they split the series one apiece. Both meetings have come by six or fewer points, so another competitive and possible classic is on the way.
