The quest for improving oneself is often a fighter’s primary motivation. Middleweight contender Jared Cannonier famously started his UFC career as a heavyweight, eventually losing over 100 pounds to compete in his current weight class. Others, such as rising heavyweight Martin Buday, began training in martial arts to lose weight.

The first preliminary fight on the UFC 323 card ended in spectacular fashion. Featherweights Mairon Santos (17-1) and Muhammad Naimov (13-4) shared the Octagon inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Santos was getting the better of Naimov in the standup, and it led to a one-punch knockout in the third round.

Melquizael Costa closed out a career year in electric fashion at UFC Vegas 112 with a devastating head kick knockout against Morgan Charriere.
