NEWPORT, Kentucky — Mermaids are heading back to the Newport Aquarium later this month. The aquarium announced that the beloved characters will be returning Memorial Day weekend.

The aquarium is hosting a different kind of aquatic mammal usually reserved for the pages of children's books: mermaids.

According to Madison Brady, the Newport Aquarium's communications manager, she hopes kids come in for the mermaids and leave with a better understanding of the world around them.

This is the first time the creatures have been to the area in three years. And on select days, the mermaids will meet aquarium visitors while they swim, play and entertain underwater.
