YouTube experienced a widespread outage Tuesday evening in the United States and internationally, with users reporting blank homepages and error messages across YouTube, YouTube Music, YouTube Kids and YouTube TV, before the company said it had implemented a fix.
YouTube is the largest streaming service by far in the U.S. At this time, the cause of the outage is unknown. Mashable reached out to Google for more information (YouTube is owned by Google), and we'll update this story if we receive more information.
For an hour, users were met with the message, "Something went wrong. Try again."
YouTube went down on Tuesday night, with more than 300,000 users experiencing technical difficulties, according to DownDetector. Problems for the digital video platform began around 5 p.m. PT, and some users saw services partially restored as early as about 6:00 p.
In a statement posted to the official TeamYouTube X account, the company revealed that the outage was caused by a problem with the recommendations system. This algorithmic system is responsible for offering you videos it thinks you'll want to watch based on your past viewing habits. The company provided additional details on a Google support page.
According to Downdetector, which tracks outages, as of 8:13 p.m. ET, more than 300,000 users reported issues on both the website and the app. Over 8,000 users also reported issues with YouTube TV, as of 8:29 p.m. ET. YouTube acknowledged the outage and said it was working to resolve the problem.
