Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday named state Attorney General Ashley Moody to the US Senate, choosing a staunch ally to fill the seat set to be vacated by Marco Rubio, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of state.

If Sen. Marco Rubio is confirmed as secretary of State, it will leave a seat open for Gov. Ron DeSantis to fill until an election in 2026.

As Ashley Moody prepares to fill an upcoming Senate vacancy, those hoping for moderation from the Florida Republican should probably lower their expectations.
