Sandbagging is a term often heard in the opening weeks of a Formula 1 season, specifically during testing sessions. The word is used by teams, drivers, media and fans to describe someone's performance - but what does it actually mean? Sandbagging is when a driver or team intentionally underperforms in their car by slowing it down.
The rules dictate that the ratio within the new engines cannot exceed 16:1, and is measured at an ambient temperature. However, Mercedes are said to have found a way which complies with the measurement in such circumstances but which potentially exceeds the ratio, and adds performance, when heated up through use of the engine.
