Pope Leo was born in the United States, but for his adopted nation of Peru, he is a “Chiclayano” – a son of the bustling northern Peruvian city where everyone seems to have a story about him.
The small city of Chiclayo in northern Peru was bustling with excitement on Friday, with businesses and locals sharing photos, memories and stories about its most famous former resident: Pope Leo XIV.
Standing on loggia of St. Peter’s basilica, newly elected Pope Leo XIV smiled, waved and appeared to hold back emotion May 8 as he introduced himself to the world as the 266th successor to St. Peter – the first American to hold that role. His first words: “Peace be with you!”
