What is the difference between hail and graupel?

GRAUPEL VS HAIL. These two are commonly confused! We’ve seen lots of reports of graupel across Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania last night and today! 🪨No this is not hail! It looks like hail, but it's actually closer to (call it the cousin of) snow! ❄️ It forms from a snowflake and collects supercooled water droplets as it falls to the surface, forming into small balls of soft ice and often bouncing off the pavement to give the appearance of hail!
