Throwing baby puffins off of a cliff is not as bad as it sounds. From late August to September, many people in Iceland search for pufflings to launch into the sea. Though it may sound harsh, it has become a practice that is vital to the survival of the species. Before, puffins were able to instinctively find the water by following the moon but now light pollution from many Icelandic towns have caused the babies to get lost and wander away from their colonies.
