Some 20,000 participants gathered at the #Mauthausen concentration camp over the weekend to mark its liberation by U.S. forces on May 11, 1945. Rabbi Abraham Cooper, the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Director of Global Social Action, spoke at the event and presented a replica of a makeshift American flag sewn by Mauthausen prisoners as the end of the war—and their liberators—neared. The prisoners commandeered sheets from the camp’s SS laundry for the flag’s background panel and Nazi banners for the
